Barcelona Bike Tour
There’s no better way to explore the beautiful Gaudi-inspired city of Barcelona than by bicycle. Being one of the most bicycle friendly cities in Europe, it boasts around 200km of cleverly placed bike lanes from mountain to sea. Cycling means you can enjoy the sites at your own pace, while letting the fresh Mediterranean breeze keep you cool. My mate Angie and I decided to do some exploring and show you the best spots to visit!
Gracia
We started the day at the bicycle themed hostel – Sant Jordi Gracia. This ultra cool, succulent-laden, boutique style hostel is the place to stay if you like cycling. Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia, and all of our Hostels in Barcelona offer bike rental for guests. From day to night, party to pathway – we have you covered. After picking up our bikes, we embark on our adventure through the lovely streets of the Gracia neighborhood. This bohemian barrio is a great place to visit if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We begin by making our way down through Eixample to picturesque Passeig de Sant Joan, and onto Sagrada.
The Sagrada familia
Riding down Avenue de Gaudi, our complete eye scape is consumed by Gaudi’s most well known masterpiece – The Sagrada Familia. This avenue delivers one of the most breathtaking views of our Barcelona bicycle tour. The unique and intricately designed Basilica has already been in construction for 135 years, with hope to finish within the decade. Renowned Catalan architect Gaudi has designed buildings throughout Barcelona, and has also inspired a lot of what we see today. Close to the Sagrada Familia you can find lots of places to eat and drink. There are many restaurants with outside seating, where you can sit and bask in Gaudi’s work. We decided to enjoy the view and a quick water break from across the road at Park de Gaudi.
Arc de Triomf and Ciutadella Park
We continued the bike tour down Carrer de Marina past the old bullring arena – La Monumental. Taking a right through the china-town of Barcelona, we begin to see the soaring arches of the Arc De Triomf. This beautiful place was originally built as the entrance to the 1888 Universal Exhibition and now remains one the cities most iconic landmarks. Angie and I cycled underneath the huge arch and along the promenade towards Ciutadella Park. By this stage we had worked up a thirst, and what better place for a rest than the lush green gardens of Ciutadella. We parked up and cooled down with some cerveza under a tree. A standard activity practiced at the best park in Barcelona.
Marina Street
Rested and ready to go again, we took Marina down to the Port Olympic. This is another one of the best streets to ride down. The wide avenue gives you some of best views of Barcelona. It’s almost a vertical straight shoot from the hills of Gracia to the seafront, with well-implemented bike lanes. Riding down past the strip of palm trees, you’ll see the twin towers of Barcelona. Built in 1992, they almost look like a grand entrance to the ocean.
Barceloneta Beach
As we get closer, inhaling the sweet smell of the sea air, we start to glimpse the bright blue Mediterranean ocean. We’ve almost made it to our final destination. We finish by riding along the palm tree-lined boardwalk of Barceloneta and arriving at the beach. The verdict is in – the best way to explore Barcelona is by bike! This mode of transport lets you admire the history and modernity of the city while working off those Sangrias from last night. It gives you the freedom to take things at your own pace, and really absorb your surroundings. You’ll see a lot in a relatively short.
