Discover the most famous Lisbon viewpoints!
If you´re visiting this charismatic city of Lisbon, you obviously have to check out the best viewpoints! Firstly familiarise yourself with the Portugese word Miradouro – meaning viewpoint – as you´ll see it everywhere! Lisbon is built over several sweeping hills, so there´s lots of awe-inspiring miradouros to check out!
Monte Agudo
The best secret viewpoint in Lisbon is the tranquil miradouro de Monte Agudo. It offers amazing panoramic views of the north and entire western part of the city with a more relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by nature, this miradouro is off the beaten path, making it the perfect spot to take a break and bask in the city´s beauty. Sitting beneath the pine trees it´s a great place for an afternoon picnic and wine without the crowds of tourists. There´s also a kiosk if you fancy a snack. Plus its only 5 minutes walk from our hostel in Lisbon!
Good Tips:
Portas do Sol
This postcard worthy viewpoint has an absolutely breath taking view of the Tejo River and Eastern front of the Alfama district. Portas do Sol viewpoint is essentially a large but cosy balcony, surrounded by classic pastel coloured Portuguese houses. Peer down to the rivers edge through the maze of charming stairwells, streets and alleys. Situated in the Barrio Alto district, you´ll even see the adorable yellow wooden Tram 28 pass by. It is truly picturesque. This is a great place to watch the sunset over the river and blushing orange rooftops, whilst sipping on a Portuguese coffee from the kiosk. Portas do Sol is the perfect place for an Instagram worthy photo!
Good Tips:
Miradouro de Graça
You´ve got to check out Miradouro de Graca, the most well known panoramic view in Lisbon! Located in Santo André on the hill next to St George castle, it offers simply stunning views across the Portuguese Capital. This romantic miradouro is offically named Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, in honor of a much loved poetess who spent many of her days here writing and admiring the city. You´ll find one of her poems printed here in remembrance, but you´ll need to translate as its in Portuguese. The viewpoint is next to Graca Church (built in 1271), with a scenic terrace offering panoramic views across central Lisbon. Grab something from the kiosk and relax on the esplanade looking out over the assortment of charming timeworn ceramic roofs.
Good Tips:
Cristo Rei
The iconic 110m tall Catholic monument is situated just across the River Tejo in the Almada district. Sitting right next to the April 25th Bridge, the statue depicts Christ with arms raised, blessing the city. The observation deck at the bottom of the statue has incredible views of Lisbon from an opposing perspective. In clear weather conditions the high vantage point offers views as far away as Sintra! Constructed in 1959, the Cristo Rei monument was inspired by the similar statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is one of the coolest viewpoints in Lisbon. The grounds and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz below are free to visit, and the
viewing platform is around 6euros. You can get here by bus, car or metro but we recommend the ferry!
Did you know?
Santa Justa Lift
The glorious neo-gothic 19th centaury elevator was originally built to transport passengers up the hill from the Baixa district to the Largo do Carmo. Now it is an iconic must see for tourists. At the top of the Santa Justa lift, there is a newly opened viewing platform! It may not be the highest point in Lisbon, but it provides incredible unrivalled panoramic views over the historic center and up towards the castle. The cast iron gothic structure, with it´s geometric patterns and polished wooden carriages make it very interesting and unique. So in peak season at peak times expect to wait a while as the lift and viewing platform can only hold limited people.
Secret tip: The Santa Justa elevator is technically a part of the public transport network of Lisbon, which means you can use your 24-hour transport ticket to ride! Don´t forget you can only buy this ticket from metro stations. For only €6.30 it´s perfect for exploring the city and you can even ride tram 28!
