The most underrated places in Barcelona that you absolutely must visit
Barcelona is one of the most incredible cities in the world. With so much to see, it is easy for some of these hidden gems to often be overlooked. Luckily for you, we have made a list of five of the most underrated places in Barcelona.
MACBA
MACBA is a contemporary art museum created by Richard Meier, and opened to the public in the fall of 1995 on November 28, 1995. In contrast with the Gothic Quarter just minutes away, this building has strong stylistic characteristics of Modernism. There are three main galleries with a cumulative collection of about 5,000 works ranging from the forties to the sixties, the sixties to the seventies, and then contemporary. An amazing gallery to see in person.
MACBA is also renowned for being one of, if not the most popular skate locations in all of Spain and it is just a sixteen-minute walk from our Sant Jordi Hostels Rock Palace. During the day, MACBA is filled with professional and amateur skaters doing what seems to be the impossible. There is a plethora of skate videos on YouTube that show you the skate culture and life of MACBA.
Good Tips:
Ciutadella Park
Cuitadella Park is one of the most beautiful parks in all of Barcelona, and it’s often overlooked by tourists. There are plenty of attractions in the park to make the trip worth your while. There is the Cascada Monumental, The Zoo, The Museu d’Art Modern, and The Catalan Parliament.
Cascada Monumental is a beautiful two-tiered fountain with speculated help from the grandmaster of architecture himself, Gaudi. This fountain is incredibly intricate and green. Palm trees stand on both sides of the fountain, and shrubbery is encapsulated within the fountain. There are four stone dragons that guard the second-tier of the fountain. In this tier, there are elegant stone structures of men, women, and children. Furthermore, topped by golden statues of horses.
Cuitadella Park is the perfect place to have a picnic, soak up the sun, and enjoy an afternoon.
Good Tips:
Labyrinth Park of Horta
The Labyrinth Park of Horta is another commonly overlooked must see attraction in Barcelona. The hedge maze inside incorporates over 600 meters of tall and beautiful hedges to get lost in. It is as beautiful to look at from above as it is to be in. Tall, beautiful, curving arches surround you in the center of the labyrinth where you will see the Statue of Eros, the Greek God of Love.
The park also has the Pavello Neoclassic located in the back. It really is a structure worth going out of the way to see even if there wasn’t a Labyrinth in the park. There is also a beautiful reflecting pool neatly hidden behind the Pavello. It is one of the most peaceful places to be in Barcelona.
Good Tips:
Museo de la xocolata
The Museo de la Xocolata is yet another underrated place in Barcelona that is often overlooked. You’re given a bar of chocolate as a ticket and you scan the packaging of the chocolate to get in! The sculptures inside the museum are nothing short of mind blowing. They have everything from a mini chocolate Messi, to the house from the movie UP!, and even La Sagrada Familia.
Also, what would the museum of chocolate be without absolutely amazing chocolate. Once you are done viewing the museum, you exit to a counter where you can buy some of the best chocolate Spain has to offer. All chocolate is made inhouse. We highly recommend getting some!
Good Tips:
Parc de L’Espanya Industrial
Parc de L’Espanya Industrial is one of the most overlooked parks in Barcelona. This park is very modern and aesthetic. There is an artificial lake in next to the famous pillars of the park. When the sun is shining, Parc de L’Espanya Industrial is the perfect place to the middle of the day, this is a perfect place to have a picnic or just hangout!
One of the most interesting parts of this park is the massive metal dragon which doubles as a slide. It is the perfect place to bring kids if you are looking to have a family day, or if you are simply into architecture!
The middle of the park has beautiful trees, and green grass which contrasts with the modernity of the park nicely. Encapsulated in the middle of these trees and grass are two concrete basketball courts if you find yourself wanting to play some basketball in your spare time!
